How to Bathe a Cat
Prepare the Materials
Gather up all the items you will need for the bath: a bathtub or basin, a cup for pouring water, a mild shampoo, a towel, and a brush. For cats with long fur, you may also need a conditioner and a comb. Place all the items close to the tub so that you can easily reach them once you start.
Fill the Tub with Water
Fill the tub with a few inches of warm—not hot—water. Make sure the water is shallow enough that the cat can easily stand in it without any risk of it spilling over. Place a rubber mat in the bottom of the tub to help prevent the cat from slipping.
Put the Cat in the Tub
Now that the tub is ready, it’s time to bring in the cat. Start by gently placing your cat in the tub and talking to it in a soothing voice. Remain calm and patient and do not force the cat. Allow the cat to get used to the feeling of the water before proceeding.
Wash the Cat
Once the cat is comfortable, start to wet the fur from the neck down with a cup of water. Apply a small amount of shampoo onto the fur and gently rub it in. After the shampoo has been worked through the fur, rinse it with the cup of water until all the soap is gone. Be sure to rinse thoroughly so there is no soap residue left on the fur.
Dry the Cat
When the bath is finished, use a towel to gently dry the cat off. You may also want to use a brush or comb to remove any tangles in the fur. Once the cat is dry, you can put a warm blanket down and allow the cat to stay there until it is completely dry.
