How to Keep Cats Out of a Room
Determine Whether the Cat Is an Intruder or Your Own
If you have a pet cat, you don't have to worry about keeping them out of a room—unless you want to give them a break from being underfoot. But if you're dealing with an intruder, then you'll need to take steps to keep them from entering your home.
Keep Doors and Windows Closed
The most obvious way to keep cats out of a room is to simply keep the doors and windows closed. This can be especially effective if you have a screened-in porch or other area that can be kept closed off to keep cats out.
Use Scents to Deter Cats
Cats don't like the smell of citrus, so using orange or lemon peels in the area can help keep cats away. You can also try using peppermint oil, which cats are known to dislike. Be sure to refresh the scent every few days to ensure the cats stay away.
Install a Cat Door
If you'd like to keep cats out of a room, but don't want to keep the door closed all the time, you can install a cat door. This is a special door that only cats can fit through, so it will keep out any intruder cats while allowing your cats to come and go as they please.
Set Up an Ultrasonic Device
Ultrasonic devices can be used to keep cats away from a certain area. These devices emit a sound that cats can hear, but humans can't. The sound is irritating to cats and will cause them to stay away.
